THE FIRST RESURRECTION AND SECOND DEATH OF REV. 20

The exact phrase “first resurrection” occurs word-for-word in the entire Bible only in Rev. 20:4 – 6. This is accompanied by a Second Death and a Final Judgment .

As with the ‘thousand years’ in Rev. 20 which we have already looked at, there are two different views in relation to the ‘first resurrection’ of verses 5 and 6, namely …

  1. The literal (physical) view of Premillennialism (Chiliasm),
  2. The symbolic (spiritual) view of Amillennialism and Postmillennialism (Anti-Chiliasm)

Open. 1:3  Salig is hy wat die woorde van die profesie lees, en die wat dit hoor en bewaar wat daarin geskrywe is, want die tyd is naby. 

Dis die kosbare seën wat uitgespreek is in verband met die lees en hoor van Openbaring.

Hierdie seën word herhaal in Open. 22:7.  Kom ons gaan kyk dan waarheen lei hierdie saligspreking  ons i.v.m. die Eerste Opstanding en Tweede dood sodat ons dit in ons harte kan bewaar.

Die presiese frase ”eerste opstanding” kom woord-vir-woord in die hele Bybel slegs in Openbaring 20:4 – 6  voor.   Dit gaan gepaard met ‘n Tweede dood en ‘n Finale oordeel.

Soos ook met die ‘Duisend jaar’ in Open. 20 waarna ons reeds gekyk het, is daar twee verskillende sienings in verband met vers 5 en 6 se ‘eerste opstanding’ nl.

  • Die letterlike (fisiese) siening van Premillennianisme (Chiliasme),
  • Die simboliese (geestelike) siening van Amelliannisme en Postmillennialisme (Anti-chiliasme).
