HERMON, DIE BERG VAN VERHEERLIKING

Geleë 25 myl (40 km) noord van die See van Galilea en aan die voet van die berg Hermon, is Caesarea Philippi. 

Dit is ook die ligging van een van die grootste fonteine ​​wat die Jordaanrivier voed.  Die Banias-waterval in daardie omgewing, wat minder as 30 voet (10 m) hoog is, word in twee strome verdeel deur ‘n boom wat aan die bokant groei.

Caesarea Philippi is in die Griekse tyd gevestig.  Die dorp is gebou rondom die bron wat die Jordaan voed, wat naby is aan ‘n grot en aan die heiligdomme wat aan Pan gewy is.  Pan is die Griekse god vir afgeleë plekke. As gevolg van Pan  word hierdie area ook Paneas genoem, of in Arabies: Banias.

Herodes die Grote het ‘n tempel van wit marmer by die grot gebou. Ná sy dood het sy seun, Herodes Filippus II (of Filippus die Tetrarch), ’n stad op die terrein gebou.  In 14 n.C. het hy die stad Caesarea Philippi genoem, ter ere van homself en keiser/Caesar Augustus.

Die oorvloedige watervoorraad het die gebied baie vrugbaar en aantreklik gemaak vir godsdienstige aanbidding.  Dis waarom talle tempels is in die Hellenistiese en Romeinse tydperk in hierdie stad gebou is.

Bekend as Baäl Hermon en Baäl Gad in die Ou Testamentiese tydperk, is hierdie terrein later Panias genoem na die Griekse god Pan wat hier aanbid is.

Die fontein wat uit die groot grot ontstaan het, het die middelpunt van heidense aanbidding geword.  In die begin van die 3de eeu v.C., is offers in die grot gegooi as offerandes aan die god Pan. Pan, die half-man half-bok god van verskrikking (“paniek”), word dikwels uitgebeeld as al spelende op sy fluit.

’n Opelug-heiligdom is vir Pan gebou langs die bron van water wat uit die grot gekom het. Aangrensend aan die “heilige” grot is ‘n rotsagtige platorand met ‘n reeks uitgekapte nisse.  Dit is bekend deur die uitbeeldings op munte van die stad, dat standbeelde van die godheid in hierdie nisse geplaas is.  Een nis het ‘n beeldhouwerk van Echo, die bergnimf, gehuisves as Pan se gemaal. ‘n Ander nis het ‘n standbeeld van Pan se pa, Hermes gehuisves, seun van die nimf Maia.  Inskripsies in die nisse noem diegene wat groot skenkings gegee het.

JaHUsha het hierdie area laat in Sy bediening besoek saam met Sy dissipels terwyl hulle op pad was na Jerusalem waar Hy gekruisig sou word, Markus 8:27.

In teenstelling met die Rots waarop heidense tempels gebou is, het JaHUsha toe verklaar: “Op hierdie rots, sal Ek my kerk bou, en die poorte van die doderyk sal dit nie oorwin nie”.

Daar is geen rekord dat JaHUsha die stad binnegegaan het nie, maar die groot belydenis van Petrus en die Verheerliking op die berg daarna, het albei in die omgewing van hierdie stad plaasgevind (Matt. 16:13), wat toe bekend was as Caesarea Filippi.

WIE WAS DIE VOORTREKKERS

Destyds is die Voortrekkers “Emigrante-Boere” genoem. Die naam Voortrekkers is in 1840 vir die eerste keer gebruik. 

Het jy geweet daar was ’n paar Britte wat die Voortrekkers tydens sommige veldtogte teen die Zoeloes gehelp het? Hulle was Alexander Biggar (van wie twee seuns deur die Zoeloes vermoor is), eerwaarde Parker en Robert Joyce. Biggar is in die geveg aan die Wit-Umfolozirivier dood. 

Tydens die Groot Trek was Europeërs, Noord-Amerikaners en Australiërs ook besig om te trek: vooruit en verder weg.

THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF THE TERM “PALESTINE”

The ancient Romans pinned the name on the Land of Israel.  In 135 CE, after stamping out the province of Judea’s second insurrection, the Romans renamed the province Syria Palaestina—that is, “Palestinian Syria.”  They did so resentfully, as a punishment, to obliterate the link between the Jews (in Hebrew, Y’hudim and in Latin Judaei) and the province (the Hebrew name of which was Y’hudah). “Palaestina” referred to the Philistines, whose home base had been on the Mediterranean coast.

The value of this history is not in how it relates to anyone’s preferences regarding the two-state solution or other ideas about peace.  Its value inheres in its accuracy.   A true account of history justifies itself.

TEL DAN,   THE PLACE OF THE WORSHIPPING OF THE GOLDEN CALF

After the Exodus, the Israelites worshipped the golden calf at mount Sinai while waiting for Moses to come down from the mountain and the people said:  “These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt”.

Jerobeam who reigned over the ten tribes, erected two golden calves and in 1 Kings 12:28 he said:    “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem:  behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt.” 

Tel Dan was prominent in this golden calf worshipping.  It lies in the area which was assigned to Dan.

Dan is one of the 12 tribes of Israel.  The tribe was named after the first of two sons born to Jacob (also called Israel) and Bilhah, the maidservant of Jacob’s second wife, Rachel. 

After the death of Moses, the Israelites were led into the Promised Land by Joshua, who divided the territory among the 12 tribes.  The portion assigned to the tribe of Dan was a region west of Jerusalem. Part of the tribe later moved to the extreme northeast and took the city of Laish, renaming it Dan.  As the northernmost Israelite city it became a point of reference in the familiar phrase “from Dan to Beersheba.”

The ancient location of Dan is the well-watered area below Mount Hermon in the north of Israel, while the city of Beersheba sits in the dry, harsh Negev desert tot the south.

Just after Solomon’s reign, the kingdom of Israel was divided because Solomon turned from the Lord and introduced the worship of false gods into the nation.  Rehoboam was given the southern 2 tribes of Israel (called Judah from this time forward), and Jeroboam received the northern 10 tribes of Israel (called Israel from this time forward).

Jerobeam feared that if the people of the 10 tribes were to go to Jerusalem to worship, they might well “revert to the house of David” which was their “old allegiance”, so he erected altars of worship at Bethel and Dan (1 Kings 12:26, 29) to keep them within his boundaries.  This remained a cultic site into the Hellenistic period, with the complex at Dan still attracting many curious visitors today.

Today we are in the Egypt of “this present world” from which we are to “exodus”. There have been golden calves erected for us too.

Die vertaling van Sag. 8:23 wissel in verskillende Bybels, maar die een wat die beste ooreenkom met die betekenis van die Hebreeuse woord “kanaph” (Strong’s H3671) is in: The Scriptures.

Zech. 8:23  Thus said YHWH of hosts, ‘In those days ten men from all languages of the nations take hold, yea, they shall take hold of the edge (H3671) of the garment of a man, a Yehudite, saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that Elohim is with you.”      –  The Scriptures

כָּנָף kânâph,: from H3670; an edge or extremity; specifically (of a bird or army) a wing, (of a garment or bedclothing) a flap, (of the earth) a quarter, (of a building) a pinnacle: – bird, border, corner, end, feather(-ed), flying, (one an-) other, overspreading, quarters, skirt, sort, uttermost part, wing(-ed).

Dit is nie “tzitzit” nie, maar “kanaph”. Wat is die leuen en wat is die waarheid? Watter betekenis het die woord “kanaph” vir ons en watter ander verse in die Woord hou daarmee verband?

Zionism was created by Theodor Herzl, an Austro-Hungarian Jewish journalist and political activist.  Zionism is a religious and political effort that brought thousands of Jews from around the world back to their ancient homeland in the Middle East and reestablished Israel as the central location for Jewish identity. Modern Zionism was officially established as a political organization by Herzl in 1897.

After the Dreyfus Affair, Herzl wrote Der Judenstaat (The Jewish State), a pamphlet that called for political recognition of a Jewish homeland in the area then known as Palestine. In 1897, Herzl organized the First Zionist Congress, which met in Basel, Switzerland. He also formed and became the first president of the World Zionist Organization. Although Herzl died in 1904 – years before Israel was officially declared a state – he’s often considered the father of modern Zionism.

In 1917, British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour wrote a letter to Baron Rothschild, a wealthy and prominent leader in the British Jewish community. In the brief correspondence, Balfour expressed the British government’s support for the establishment of a Jewish home in Palestine. This letter was published in the press one week later and eventually became known as the “Balfour Declaration.”

The text was included in the Mandate for Palestine – a document issued by the League of Nations in 1923 that gave Great Britain the responsibility of establishing a Jewish national homeland in British-controlled Palestine. Two well-known Zionists, Chaim Weizmann and Nahum Sokolow, played important roles in obtaining the Balfour Declaration.

In the years before and during World War II, thousands of European Jews fled to Palestine or other regions to escape hostility. After the Holocaust ended, Zionist leaders actively promoted the idea of an independent Jewish nation.

With the end of Great Britain’s mandate in Palestine and the British army’s withdrawal, Israel was officially declared an independent state on May 14, 1948. The rise of Zionism led to massive Jewish immigration into Israel.

THE DESTRUCTION OF JERUSALEM

Shávuot is die laaste fees van die lentefeeste.  Die feeste van Israel is die bloudruk vir die vervulling van profesie. Net soos wat die volk Israel dit aanvanklik fisies beleef het en later jaarliks moes gedenk het, is die eerste helfte van die feeste volkome deur JaHUsha vervul.  Die ander helfte, die herfsfeeste, sal grootliks vervul word wanneer Hy weer kom vir Sy Bruid.

Die Israel van Elohiem (Gal. 6:16) het ontstaan as ‘n Koninklike Priesterdom (1 Pet. 2:9, vgl. Ex. 19:6).  Dit is net moontlik as Israel op een of ander wyse aan die Koning, JaHUsha, verbind kan word.  Diè verbintenis is ‘n liefdesverhouding.

Wanneer ‘n paartjie besluit om verloof raak, word hulle ook aan mekaar verbind.  ‘n Verlowing is ‘n verbond.

UNDERSTANDING THE DAY OF ATONEMENT OR YOM KIPPUR

The Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur, is the most holy and solemn day of the Biblical calendar. It is the only day when the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies, the most sacred place within the Tabernacle and ancient temples. It was the only day when the high priest reconciled Israel with Elohim and symbolically brought them back into the presence of YaHUaH. No other day, and no other ancient ritual comes closer to the full meaning and purpose of the atonement of YaHUsha Messiah.
